Malaysia's top bookstores refuse to sell Harry Potter book amid price war |
Malaysia's top bookstores refuse to sell Harry Potter book amid price war
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Major Malaysian bookstores pulled the final volume of the Harry Potter series off their shelves Saturday, protesting a price war sparked by supermarket retailers that sold the book at a massive discount.
Only customers who reserved copies of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" in advance could collect the book, Malaysia's three leading book chains — MPH Bookstores, Popular Book Co. and Times The Bookshop — said in a joint statement.
The companies, which run a total of more than 100 branches nationwide, also scrapped promotional activities — such as quiz competitions and breakfast parties — that were supposed to mark the book's launch at 7:01 a.m. Malaysian time Saturday (2301 GMT Friday).
The move was in response to what the booksellers called an "indiscriminate price discount" by grocery giants — including Malaysian outlets of Britain's Tesco PLC and France's Carrefour SA — that offered the new book at a discount of 40 ringgit ($11.40; €8.25) off its recommended retail price of 109.90 ringgit (US$31.40; $22.70).
The bookshops' decision, announced following a meeting late Friday, caught some customers by surprise.
"I have to rush to Tesco now and hope I can still get a copy," said college student Cynthia Raj. "This is terrible."
Nearly 80 Harry Potter fans had gathered outside Tesco's outlet in the Kuala Lumpur suburb of Ampang by 7 a.m.
"I'm here because the location is convenient," said 25-year-old clerk Tan Soh Yin. "But I wouldn't have minded paying more than 100 ringgit for the book. It's the final Harry Potter book. This only happens once in a lifetime."

Let professionals run football association |
Comment: Let professionals run football association
By : M. K. MeganMALAYSIAN football is the pits.
The remaining match in the ongoing Asian Cup against Iran on Wednesday will be insignificant, although another hammering is expected given the team’s pathetic performances, not only in this tournament but also in other tournaments in the last few years.
The best thing now is to bury the whole episode and start from scratch.
It would not be embarrassing to take leave from active international football for about 10 years and build a formidable team that we can be proud of instead of pushing ahead with a "schoolboy team" that passes off as our national side.
Everyone, from clubs to state FAs to the Football Association of Malaysia, has contributed to the sorry state of soccer in the country.
We have had politicians and members of the royalty at the helm of the FAM for more than 20 years. What have we got to show for it, pray tell?
FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah did the honourable thing yesterday by resigning from all positions he held in the national football body.
A poll conducted by TV3 during its prime news slot yesterday revealed that 95 per cent of the viewers supported the resignation of Tengku Abdullah.
His resignation indicates he has taken responsibility for the poor performance of the national team. But he is not the only person who should take the blame. The whole committee should share the blame.
Instead of trying to persuade Tengku Abdullah to reconsider his decision, the officials should pick up courage and follow his lead: They should all resign.
Malaysia was once on par with teams such as South Korea and Japan. Today, these teams are playing in the World Cup tournament. Where is Malaysia? Why, losing to teams such as those from the Philippines and Sri Lanka, of course. What a shame. What a tragedy.
Sure, FAM brought several important tournaments such as the 1997 Youth World Cup and the current Asian Cup to our shores. But where is the result we have been yearning for? Has it contributed to raising the standard of the game locally?
Instead of just being gracious — and losing — hosts, we should start looking inwards. We should improve the standard of our game before playing against big teams.
It is frustrating for football fans. They have watched the national team’s slide since it last qualified for a prestigious international tournament — the 1980 Moscow Olympics — when the late Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah was FAM president.
Many are saying the slide started after Sultan Ahmad Shah and others took over in 1984. We have not seen any euphoric football moment since then.
From being ranked about 60-something by Fifa in the 80s, Malaysia is now languishing at a poor 149th position.
It is no wonder that FAM is not getting corporate sponsorships. Which company or brand would want to be associated with losers?
We are bankrupt where football is concerned and now FAM says it is on the verge of bankruptcy.
There is only one thing to do if the officials are really passionate about the game and if they want the sport to reach greater heights: FAM should be run by professionals.

FOOTBALL IN CRISIS: What the fans say |
FOOTBALL IN CRISIS: What the fans say
Below are some of the comments which came through the NST Online that have been featured in our printed edition. Thank you for your participation.
- It is the collective responsibility of the FAM council members for the poor state of football in the country. Therefore, all council members should resign. — King Chong, Johor
- I am glad to see that, finally, the public has given up hope on our football team. I gave up a long time ago and have always been surprised when people say things like "give them a chance", "new members have changed the team", "good management" when the national team kept losing and losing. Our football team just don’t have it in them, why waste time, effort and money. — Gerald Fernandez
- Get the politicians out of the sport! We should not be wasting taxpayers money on quitters and indisciplined players. Tengku Abdullah should not be the only one resigning. If the FAM officials mean what they say about collective responsibility, then they all should go. — Firdaus
- Malaysian players and the FAM management will always be remembered as a disgrace to our people. — Joe, Shah Alam
- I felt sorry for Tengku Abdullah. At least he has the courage to do it. — Borhanuddin Musa, Kuantan
- Why keep on bashing the officials and management ? What about the players and coaches? Are the players really the best in the country and are they totally committed to play for the country? We should look further into this and select players without fear or favour. — Richard, Kuala Lumpur
- I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. — Fannie Lao Hamer.
- Malaysian football is an embarrassment to the country and failure should not be tolerated. — Old School
- Collective responsibility they all say? Good. They all should resign. — GCGH
- Let the professionals run the show. EPL is the perfect example. No politics. — Siv
- After more than 10 years of failure, the FAM’s top management is still the same. When is Raja Ahmad going to resign? — Concerned, Penang
- What can I say, I feel so ashamed. Bunch of players who are well paid, so called "professionals", world class training centres, sports science, but yet they have only brought shame to the country. Just look at the Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Thais — they have passion for their country. — Dream, Melbourne

Ako admits guilt |
Ako admits guilt
By SHUHAIDAH SAHARANI
“YES, it was me. But I hope the media won’t make a big deal out of this.”
That was Ako Mustapha’s response when asked if he was the actor caught in a
khalwat raid on Tuesday.
A Malay tabloid reported yesterday that a famous actor was caught for being in close proximity with a woman by the Selangor Religious Department (Jais) at midnight, two days ago.
According to the article, Jais officers raided a condominium in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, following several tip-offs.
After knocking the door and ringing the doorbell a few times, the team pried open the grille and door.
Initial checks revealed it was empty, but upon investigating, they found a lighted but locked room.
After several knocks, the couple then appeared from the room.
After failing to produce a marriage certificate, the actor and his companion were taken to a police station to have their statements recorded. They are now out on bail.
The article did not reveal the actor’s identity, only saying that he was in his 30s and had a relationship with an actress before their relationship ended in the middle of 2006. However, word was going around that it was Ako Mustapha, who starred in Buli and Gangster.
Ako was initially reluctant to talk about it but opened up after some coaxing.
“I don’t want the media to make a big fuss. There are bigger cases happening, like the Altantuya murder case.
“That’s more serious and that’s what the media should be focusing on,” said Ako.
He explained that the reality is much more innocent than it’s made out to be.
“I slept at a friend’s house because I was too lazy to drive from home to my film locations and back.
“I am shooting several dramas back to back, and most of them are in Ampang. I need to arrive early and usually, it ends late at night, so I decided to sleep over at her house.
That’s what happened,” said Ako, who lives in Kota Damansara.
“We did nothing. I just slept there.” Asked if they ‘slept’ in the same room, Ako denied it.
“That’s a lie. We were in the same house, not in the same room.” Ako added that only he was charged since the female companion was a non-Muslim.
“I admit that I am guilty because it was my fault. I know it’s wrong to stay under the same roof with a woman I am not related to. I am owning up to it. Let’s not blow this out of proportion.” Asked if he might consider marrying the girl, Ako said no.
“She is just a friend.”
