Nokia takes on Google with free navigation app

Nokia is making its navigation service free to all GPS-enabled Nokia devices in a move that will help the company better compete in the smartphone market against the likes of Apple and Google.

Starting Thursday, Nokia users will be able to download for free the client that enables GPS phones to get Ovi Maps and Navigation, as well as, various city guides on their phones. Nokia has been offering the maps and navigation service for more than two years. After its acquisition of Navteq announced in 2007, it enhanced the service by adding turn-by-turn pedestrian navigation. And it added premium content from partners, such as Lonely Planet.

Previously, customers could only access the basic maps for free. Turn-by-turn navigation and city guides had cost extra.

But that all changes Thursday when Nokia begins offering these services for free. Initially, the free service will be available for 10 of Nokia's phones, including the Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia E72. Eventually, the software client will be available for all Nokia GPS-enabled phones. And starting in March, the company will begin shipping new GPS Nokia phones with the software and maps for the service pre-installed.

Taking mobile navigation to the mass market
Personal navigation devices, such as ones made by Garmin and TomTom, have become big hits with consumers. And now personal navigation is gaining popularity in mobile phones, thanks to GPS-enabled handsets, and applications such as Google Maps. Approximately 27 million people worldwide had GPS navigation on their mobile phones at the end of 2009, according to the research firm Canalys. Nokia estimates that by offering the service free on its phones it can boost that figure to 50 million.

"We think this will transform the mobile navigation market overnight by providing consumers with an out-of-the-box experience," said Tero Ojanperä, executive vice president of services for Nokia. "I'll admit it wasn't the easiest process getting this service in the past. But now we're moving from the early market to the mass market."

While Nokia still leads the world in overall cell phone sales, it's been losing ground over the past couple of years to new competitors such as Apple and Research In Motion in the high-end smartphone market. Competition will likely intensify in 2010 and beyond as manufacturers flood the market with a steady stream of new smartphones using the Google Android operating system.

Consumers are attracted to the new breed of smartphones, because of all the mobile applications that can run on these devices. Maps and Navigation powered by Google are key applications on these devices.

Taking on Google
Nokia sees personal navigation and location services as a major differentiator, setting its phones apart from its competitors and adding value for wireless operators. Specifically, Nokia executives believe that its mapping and navigation services are superior to Google's own Google Maps and Google Navigation, which are preloaded and offered for free on many popular handsets, such as the iPhone, the Motorola Droid, and Google's own NexusOne.

For example, Nokia's Ovi Map service offers navigation in 74 countries in 46 languages. And it can provide traffic information in more than 10 countries, as well as detailed maps for more than 180 countries.

Ojanperä said that creating and maintaining a dynamic mapping and navigation service is not easy. He said the company is continually updating its mapping content and it specifically looks at 250 different attributes to collect data using cars driving around various cities around the world to verify information is correct.

"Google offers free car navigation in one country," he said. "We offer it in 74 countries. We are truly global where others are not."

Another important differentiator for Nokia is the free access to the Lonely Planet Travel guides.

But Ojanperä also said that Nokia's service is better for wireless operators because the service and application consumes far less bandwidth than competing mapping navigation services, such as Google Maps and Google Navigation.

Ojanperä said that the technology Nokia uses to serve up its maps is 10 times more network efficient than Google's method. Nokia uses what's called a hybrid vectorizing mapping method, which allows users to zoom in and out of the map without downloading the same map multiple times. By contrast, Ojanperä said that Google's technology requires that a new map be downloaded each time a user zooms in or out of the map, which increases the amount of bandwidth needed to use the service.

For this reason, Ojanperä said he believes that wireless operators will want to work with Nokia to sell its phones and make the Ovi services available on their networks.

This sales pitch could be particularly useful in the U.S., where Nokia has a weak presence and only offers a handful of devices with subsidized price tags through a wireless operator. For several years, Nokia has sold most of its high-end phones in the U.S. directly to consumers. But in a market where someone can get an iPhone subsidized by a carrier for $99, it's difficult to sell a $500 unsubsidized phone.

That said, the new free mapping and navigation services could finally give wireless operators a reason to sell Nokia phones. It could also give consumers a reason to buy a Nokia phone, even without a subsidy. A personal navigation device can cost between $200 and $300, which makes a $500 unsubsidized Nokia phone look pretty good.

Ojanperä said Nokia plans to continue selling its phone directly to consumers but its primary focus will be to target wireless carriers in U.S. market.

Regardless of which channels Nokia chooses to sell the phone, one thing is certain. The company will have to spend some money marketing Ovi Maps and Navigation to the mass market. At this point, anyone with a computer is familiar with Google and is likely familiar with Google Maps.

Nokia's Navteq and Ovi brands are relatively unknown in the U.S., so the company has a lot of work ahead of it.

It is said that a family that eats together will stay together but how about a family that operates a restaurant together?

For Simply Spice Restaurant manager Azmi Ahmad, the move enabled him to spend more time with his family.

Azmi, along with his wife Maria Lee Abdullah and daughter Ayesha opened the cafe and restaurant at Kompleks Niaga Utama in Bangsar Utama about three months ago. His son, who is studying at a local university, also drops by to help during his free time.

While Azmi takes care of the management and operations of the restaurant, Maria shares her culinary skills and family recipes in the kitchen.

Ayesha helps with the serving and keeps the staff on their toes to ensure that customers get what they want.

The restaurant, tucked away in a corner of the building, has injected a certain charm to the previously bare area.

Despite its simple design and decorations, the restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor dining for customers.

Colourful: Nasi Tumpang is a popular choice at the restaurant.

Minimalist style seems to be the key for Simply Spice.

“We want to keep it simple but with food that people enjoy. There is nothing fancy here - simple design and simple food but it's simply delicious,” Azmi said.

The menu only has about 20 local and Western dishes.

One of the highlights is the Nasi tumpang - flavoured yellow rice served on a plate in the shape of a cone with a choice of vindaloo mutton, masala fish or the restaurant's special ayam panggang bersenggek, which is oven-grilled chicken.

The rice dish is also served with pineapple pajeri and acar. Though the rice dish originated in Indonesia, the recipe used at the restaurant is Maria's own.

“The recipe for ayam panggang bersenggek is part of her family's recipes and we are sharing it with the customers.

Flashback food: According to Azmi, the Chicken Chop is prepared like it was at the old colonial rest houses.

“All the spices used in the dish are ground and hand-mixed by her,” Azmi said.

He explained that bersenggek actually means grilled with coconut milk (santan).

The spices and santan gave the chicken its rich flavour, similar to rendang.

Another must try dish at the restaurant is the mee rebus Utara.

Unlike the Southern version, which uses keledek for its rich and thick gravy, the Northern version uses a combination of pumpkin and potato.

Mashed and boiled potato and pumpkin not only thicken the gravy but also give it a tinge of sweetness.

“We also serve our mee rebus with sambal sotong on the side to add flavour and spice for those who like it hot,” Azmi said.

Something light: Caesar's Salad is also available on the menu.

For those who prefer Western dishes, several choices are available, including several pasta dishes and salads.

However, Azmi said most would opt for the Oriental Chicken.

The chicken is dipped in batter and then deep-fried. Served piping hot, the chicken comes with baked beans on the top. Though the outer layer is crispy and crunchy, the meat itself is juicy once cut - just like the way it was once served at the colonial rest houses.

“I used to follow my parents to stay at rest houses like the one in Taiping and that was how they served their chicken.

“I am trying to bring back that memory,” Azmi explained.

The outlet also serves chocolate cheese cake made by Ayesha.

Those who like Korean food can head to Tongkun, which opened in Solaris Mont' Kiara in September. Tongkun is a popular restaurant chain in South Korea that is famed for its authentic barbecue food.

Tongkun, which means “big size” – a reference to the portions of meat – serves ethnic Korean meat dishes that are specially marinated with more than 27 spices.

Choice beef: The Waygu Kkotdeungsim or Grilled Beef Rib Eye Roll and the Jin Galbi Sal or Beef Short Rib.

The meats undergo a special five-step marinating process that involves boiling, cooling to room temperature, marinating with spices, chilling and putting the final touches to the meats before they are served, to be barbecued at the table.

According to Wee Joon Ho, managing director of Dynasty Hallmark Sdn Bhd, the local franchisee of Tongkun, the restaurant is the first Korean restaurant chain in Malaysia.

“This restaurant is very famous in Korea,, where there are about 98 outlets. We brought the chain here because we wanted to give people here a taste of the real food and environment in our country,” he said, adding that they hoped to cater to the many foreigners in the vicinity of the outlet in addition to the local Chinese community.

The outlet is unpretentious, with a homely feel.

This is how it's done: Wee showing how the meat is grilled.

“We have given the place an organic and homely environment, hence the use of a lot of shades of green, which helps soften the environment,” Wee explained. The tables come with grill and steam absorber.

“We use premium meats like wagyu, which is considered the most tender, succulent and tastiest beef in the world. For our pork dishes, we use the highest quality local pork,” he said, adding that separate grilling equipment was used for the beef dishes to respect the sensitivities of patrons who did not eat pork.

“For our side dishes, there two sets of menu which we rotate every day,” Wee added. Among the side dishes are the popular kimchi and scrambled eggs.

Patrons can also look forward to complementing their meal with Korean ginseng tea, Soju (Korean liquor) and Bak Sek Ju, a ginseng liquor which is said to promote longevity because of the herbs, like ginseng, ginger, liquorice, yarrow, cinnamon, vine and arrowroot, that are infused into the wine.

Prices of the meal sets range from RM15 to RM150.

Last week,i went for dinner at Cowboy Station Steak House, Kelana Jaya. The place is quite ok,with nice table,light,big screen tv. The steak is OK..but i much prefer F1 steakhouse for the steak,but here there are lot of choice of drinks. The price is quite expensive for two set of steaks with Strawberry milk shake+lychee drink = RM74. But nevermind because the waiter/waitress were very friendly. 4 star for service. If you wanna give a try,Cowboy Station is a recommended steak house.

WHEN a lot next to their furniture shop in Amcorp Mall fell vacant, Khalkanie Aliaman and her husband, Azman Anas, decided to open a restaurant there. Drawing from their love for Negeri and Minang food, and the experience of Azman’s parents (father from Padang and mother from Negeri Sembilan), they put together a menu that would combine genuine recipes from the two places and hired chefs from Sumatera who can prepare the dishes. That’s how Salero Negori (“tastes of Negeri”) started.

Today, they have three outlets and the food is prepared at a central kitchen to ensure uniformity and set the foundations for further expansion. Each of the restaurants is ornately decorated with pieces from their furniture shop, KAZ Timeless Décor, which specialises in selling restored local furniture from the 1920s through the 1960s.

It is kampung-style cuisine with a difference at Restoran Duyong in Kelab Darul Ehsan during the Ramadan buffet promotion.

The promotion offers an array of traditional Malay food.

Chef Mustafa Kamalahmad Sarbani, who leads the team at the restaurant, said most Malay food served at restaurants these days were not authentic.

“With our mixed culture, the food served has a Malaysian identity to it.

“For the promotion, we have authentic Malay food,'' he said.

Among these are Gulai Tempoyak, Gulai Kawah and Asam Pedas.

The highlight will be the Grilled Ox Tongue. Mustafa said the Malay delicacy was a popular dish during Ramadan at the outlet.

Appetisers: Ulams are also part of the buffet spread at Duyong Restaurant.

“Last year, we ordered about 1,000kg of ox tongue,'' he said.

To prepare the delicacy, the ox tongues are marinated with spices like oregano, basil and local spices such as cardamom and cinnamon for two days.

The ox tongues are then boiled to remove the layer of skin before it is baked.

“It is important to remove the skin after the marinating process to preserve the juiciness of the meat,” he said.

It is then served with air assam and other sauces like mushroom and black pepper.

Spicy affair: The Udang Masak Pedas.

The buffet is priced at RM43++ for adults and RM26++ for children.

Choose from dishes like Courgette Ritters with Chili Jam, Spring Onion Pancakes with Hoisin Chicken and Hoisin Sauce, Snapper with Couscous and Spiced Vegetable Sauce with Chickpeas and Potato, Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak, Kambing Pasamar, Daging Pang-gang Air Assam, Udang Galah Lemak Cili Padi and Sotong Sambal Petai.

These can be accompanied with Nasi Tomato or Nasi Briyani, or the perennial Ramadan dish – Bubur Lambuk.

The fresh seafood counter is laden with juicy oysters, shrimps, crabs and other crustaceans for the seafood aficionado, while Japanese food fans can take their pick from the sushi and sashimi platters.

The carving and cooking station are where the Whole Salmon Baked in Rock Salt, Roasted Rib Eye, Roast Beef, pastas and noodles are waiting to be dished out to hungry diners.

Specialities like Roasted Leg of Lamb with Honey, Balsamic Vinegar and Caramelised Garlic Cloves are varied on a daily basis.

“Another speciality is our Oyster Rocke-feller, which we prepare by baking the oyster, then topping it with cream sauce, cheese and spinach,” said Vogue Café junior sous chef Alex Yee.

The Chocoholic Corner also comes highly recommended for those who cannot get enough of chocolate desserts.

Old favourites: Vogue Cafe's Ramadan buffet spread also offers Malay kuih for desserts.

Choose from mouth-watering items like Green Tea Breakaway Chocolate, White Ro-che, Strawberry and Lemon Truffles, Choco-late Almond Nougat, Chocolate Branches and Dream Chocolate Brownies – all of which are prepared fresh daily by the hotel’s pastry department.

Alternatively, diners can go for desserts like Malay kueh, fresh fruits or pudding.

Over at TEMPTationS, a café located at the East Wing Lobby Level of the hotel, diners can whet their appetite with dishes from ten different stations, including Salad, Japanese, Chinese and Western stations.

Thinking styles

The human mind can be very powerful when you make full use of it. Some of you may wish that you could think as fast as lightning, and be always full of ideas and creativity. But how can you do this? The Nine Lightning Speed Executive Thinking Styles is the answer. It is a whole-brain integration thinking system which makes full use of your left and right brain. It will make your ideas systematic, helping you become a Super Executive.

If your sales and marketing team, finance or administration department, product designer or production line practise the Lightning Speed Thinking Styles, their minds will be like the ocean, flowing with thoughts, wonderful ideas, creative marketing plans, strategies and a variety of solutions. This will grow your business and your personal success at a faster speed. Here, we introduce four types of thinking styles.

1 Forward Thinking

Forward thinking is about anticipating something before it happens and looking into the future. It involves planning for success and contingencies to ensure continuous accomplishments and evaluating the past and present so as to see the future. When you are exercising your mind with forward thinking during a meeting, you will be able to flow with the ideas of the person who is speaking, rather than daydreaming.

What results does your boss hope to see before the next meeting? Reflective thinking is a great form of output understanding. With reflective thinking you can evaluate your daily and weekly performance – find out what works and what needs improvement.

After meeting your client for a presentation or a discussion, ask yourself a few questions; for example, what did you leave out during your presentation, or what else could you have added to be more persuasive. Then write them down. In order to create a process of continuous learning, keep doing reflective thinking, whether you produce the right or wrong results. You will constantly grow and build yourself, your potential and your future.

3 Creative Passion Thinking

Creativity is the ability to imagine or invent something new. It helps you generate new ideas by combining, changing or reapplying existing ideas. When you have a passion for creativity, you will think of new ideas. You may think, “I am a technical and logical person rather than a creative thinker ?” You might not be aware that there are certain negative systems in you that block you.

Recognise and unblock your negative system

In fact, your attitude towards creative thinking influences your abilities. When you tell yourself that it is impossible for you to think of a creative idea, then you are probably not able to do it.

Sometimes, when you have a creative idea, you dare not present it at a meeting because you are afraid people might laugh. The social pressure to conform and to be ordinary is so strong that you would rather choose not to be creative.

Mental blocks can also obstruct your thoughts and limit you to think small. At this point you may apply the other thinking styles such as: forward thinking, reflective thinking, visual thinking and so on to help you look for more information and develop creative thinking.

Build your passion for creativity

A creative thinker wants to understand the reason behind certain decisions, situations, solutions, events, facts, etc. Explore new knowledge because knowledge is necessary for creativity to flourish. Always challenge yourself with creative ideas and break the traditional mindset and come out with a new idea. Creative thinkers usually practise the ability to see the need for improvement. They like to question themselves, “How can I make it better?” That is how science and technology develop and revolve according to society’s need.

4 Solution Thinking

Your car is blocked by another car in the car park, and you are in a hurry to keep an important appointment. How will you react? If you get into your car and keep pressing your motor-horn, do something to the person’s car or keep grumbling without taking any action, then you are problem-focusing. When you walk around looking for the car owner, call your colleague to drive you to the appointment or take a cab, you are a solution thinker.

People with solution thinking always focus on ways to solve the problem. They usually ask themselves “how it can be done ?” and not tell themselves “why it cannot be done.” A problem is an opportunity for a positive act and improvement. When you fear problems, your reaction to a challenging situation is often the major problem rather than the challenge itself.

In the business world, many situations such as customers’ complaints, mechanism breakdown or insufficient resources can occur. It just depends on how you handle the situation. If you are willing to take it as a challenge, congratulations! You are on the right track to solution thinking. Develop this solution thinking attitude and it will lead you to success.

Kuala Lumpur Travel Guide

Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, is located on the west coast of Peninsula of Malaysia. Covering some 243 sq km, it lies approximately 40 km from the coast. Kuala Lumpur -or KL as it is commonly called- lies in a valley surrounded by jagged hills. Kuala Lumpur was originally a mining settlement in the late 1800s where tin was discovered at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. Although KL's tin trade has declined since, the prosperity of the city has continued to grow.

Today, KL is home to 1.5 million people within the city proper, and more than 6 million in the surrounding metropolitan area. It is the political and cultural centre of the nation. Kuala Lumpur leads Malaysia's fast paced development in trade and commerce, banking and finance, manufacturing, transportation, information technology and tourism. Malaysia is considered one of the fastest growing country in South-East Asia.

Kuala Lumpur has plenty to offer in terms of sights and shopping. Not to be missed is the Petronas Twin Towers at the heart of the city, one of the modern marvels of the world. The Towers are called Menara (Malay for "tower") 1 and 2, and until October 2003, they were the tallest buildings in the world.

The towers are connected at the 41 and 42 level by a Skybridge. This is open to visitors on Tuesdays to Sundays from 8.30am to 5pm. At the foot of the towers, there is the superb KLCC shopping mall, offering brand-name items, superb eateries and several attractions such as the Petrosains Discovery Centre and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre) is easily accessible by taxi and the Light Rapid Transit train system. It is also within walking distance of major city hotels. ...

Another vantage point for a bird's-eye-view of KL is the KL Tower ("Menara KL") a telecommunication tower (www.kuala-lumpur.ws/menarakl). The uniquely designed building resembles a giant baby's rattle and is one of the world's tallest concrete structures at 421m. The tower has an observation deck offering a 360-degree view of the city, and a restaurant serving a scrumptuous buffet lunch and dinner. Reservations are needed as it is usually fully booked.

Other sights that are good for photo opportunities are the Jamek Mosque at the confluence of Klang and Gombak Rivers, the National Mosque, the Thean Hou Temple and the Sri Mahamariaman Temple. Do note that visitors to these places of worship are requested to dress appropriately. In mosques, visitors may be asked to put on a robe to cover exposed arms and legs, before allowed entry.

Close to downtown is the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, a 10.5ha natural jungle sanctuary for birds and wildlife, with footpaths for visitors. The Lake Gardens area contains a few pleasant attractions. There is the National Monument (a war monument featuring a dramatic and stunning bronze statue designed by American sculptor Felix de Weldon to commemorate the fallen heroes during World War II and the Emergency period of communist unrest), the KL Bird Park which boasts of being the largest open aviary in the region, the Orchid Garden, the Hibiscus Garden, the Butterfly and Deer Park and the National Planetarium, with several exhibits of interest (although not that many to warrant a specific visit - go there if you are in the vicinity and have time to spare). The planetarium is joined by a pedestrian bridge to the National Museum.

The Sultan Abdul Samad building (where the Supreme Court sits) and the old Railway Station, Parliament House are interesting pieces of architecture that never fail to attract shutterbugs.

KL is fast becoming a city of museums, with a myriad of sites for the curious visitors, sited about the Lake Gardens vicinity. The National Museum contains exhibits of Malaysia's past and holds themed exhibits seasonally. There are also the Tunku Abdul Rahman Memorial housing the memorabilia of the nation's first prime minister, including his first office(!) and official residence; the Tun Abdul Razak Memorial in memory of the second Prime Minister (the memorial itself is housed in the official residence of the Prime Minister); the Police Museum; the Islamic Art Museum; the Civil Service Memorial; the KL Natural History Museum. The Islamic Arts Museum is especially breathtaking with its inverted domes and miniature of mosques from around the world.

Kuala Lumpur is also a shoppers' haven. The Central Market is a huge centre with restaurants and a good place to shop for curios and handicraft items. If your timing is right visit the Sunday Market (it usually opens from Saturday night until the wee hours of Sunday morning). When tourist arrived there, they will find out full of Malaysian culture, and it could probably get some Malaysia history through the handicraft items.

Other shopping opportunities are Lot 10 (upmarket branded goods); KL Plaza; Sungai Wang Plaza; Imbi Plaza and Low Yat Plaza (computer and electronic goods); and Berjaya Times Squares (upmarket, too). All located in the so-called Golden Triangle of KL. Slightly out of town is the Mid-Valley Megamall. In the Petaling Jaya area, place to shopping are 1Utama, Sunway Piramid, and IOI Mall Puchong. There is great of city life as a lot of variety in Kuala Lumpur.

The most popular day trip from Kuala Lumpur is to the limestone Batu Caves. It lies a short distance north of town and the main cave has to be accessed by climbing up 272 stairs. Hindu devotees perform annual pilgrimages during the festival of Thaipusam by putting on kavadis and climbing these steps to the temple inside the main cave. Besides that, if you want to get around the forest enviroment. There is a place called Rawang which about 40 KM away from Kuala Lumpur City. Temple Park is one of the well-known place for local and tourist. Temple Park has covered by forest environment and there is a water falls within it. So, usually those who wants to reduce stress and had a family day, Temple Park is quite good for them.

About 45 minutes away from the heart of the city is Genting Highlands, practically a city in itself. Billed as the City of Entertainment, it boasts a family-oriented theme park, internationally-billed shows and live performances, a golf course, an equestrian course, and the country's only licensed casino. The highlands resort offers low-cost but very comfortable bus services at frequent intervals from several main destinations in KL. The buses travel up to a cable-car station midway and visitors continue their journey on what Genting claims to be the fastest cable-car in the region.

Flea Market in Kuala Lumpur

If there’s one thing that can rival a Malaysian’s love for food, it’s got to be the love for shopping. Arguably the most popular national pastime, it’s a weekend ritual that packs out malls all over the country. Yet before the days of glitzy shopping complexes, the humble neighbourhood pasar pagi (morning market selling fresh food) was the centre of commercial activity, a place bursting with all manner of sights, smells and sounds. To be sure, every country has such markets, but the Malaysian version is distinctive for its multicultural flavour, wide range of goods and ubiquitous rainwater puddles and beggars.

If the pasar pagi was (and still is) the province of housewives, the pasar malam (night market) attracts a more diverse crowd. Powered by noisy generators, these markets are a good place to grab a smorgasbord of local delicacies, cheap clothes, household necessities and various knick-knacks. Though many find the whole experience a little too overwhelming for the senses, there’s no denying that a market does have its own charms – hence the growing popularity of flea markets. These manage to capture the bustle and carnival-like atmosphere of a traditional market, without the attendant odours, street beggars and rainwater puddles which are a turn-off to so many.

Originally a market selling surplus (more euphemistically termed ‘pre-loved’) goods, flea markets supposedly derived their name from the flea-infested rags and clothing which were the standard fare. Founded on the concept of one person’s junk being another’s treasure, these colourful bazaars started in the West and slowly made their way to our shores.

One of the earliest flea markets in Kuala Lumpur was the ABC Market at Plaza Mont’ Kiara, an affluent residential and office area. “Our CEO, Dato’ Michael Yam, enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of flea markets overseas and decided to bring the concept back here. Our ABC (Arts, Bric-a-Brac & Craft) Market started in March 2000 and caters mainly to the community at Mont’ Kiara as part of our effort to offer residents a total community lifestyle package. It’s a place to enjoy your Sunday with a leisurely stroll through the stalls,” explained Woo Siew Chin, Assistant Manager of Corporate Communications at Sunrise Bhd, the developer of the Mont’Kiara residential enclave. “We’re very particular about offering a wide selection, and so limit the number of stalls selling similar goods. It’s important that we offer customers good quality products with a unique touch.”

Indeed, the casual onlooker will be surprised by the amount of planning and organisation that goes into the management of these seemingly informal markets. “We try to keep things fresh and exciting by introducing periodic changes. For example, we maintain the candy-stripe theme for table skirtings but change the colours monthly. A balloting system of sorts ensures that every vendor has a chance to occupy prime spots. The resulting changes in stall layout coupled with the flexibility to accommodate new vendors keeps the market from getting ‘stale’.” explains Ismail Stork of Le Tresor Legacy Ventures Sdn Bhd, which manages the Street Market at The Curve Mutiara Damansara. A relative newcomer to the scene, The Street Market exudes a quaint, artsy feel and boasts 140 stalls selling a mind-boggling array of goods.

Both the ABC Market and Street Market have other plus points to their advantage: the market area is surrounded by stylish cafes offering al fresco dining and live music, so they’re a hub-bub of activity day and night. It’s this mix of lifestyle offerings that has helped pulled in the crowds, who comprise not only shopping-savvy women but also their partners and families. It proves the saying ‘there’s something for everyone’ – if shopping is not your thing, there are other goings-on to keep you occupied at these markets. The flea market at Amcorp Mall, on the other hand, is more conventional in its approach. It began a decade ago, and unlike its younger counterparts, is held indoors and while it is surrounded by the mall’s offerings, appears to be more for ‘serious’ flea market shoppers. You won’t find as much of the trendy togs and fashionable desirables as at ABC or Street, but if you’re an antique collector, this is the place for you. Second-hand clothes and other items are also ‘hot’ sellers. “I like going to the Street Market because I get to indulge in the three Bs of shopping – browse, bargain and buy!” laughs Carolyn Lau. “The items on sale are unique and striking, and there’s always a chance that I’ll find a really good bargain – either in terms of a good price or a rare, one-of-a-kind find.” For one-of-a-kind finds, you can’t afford to bypass Zainab and Noranny Mohd Ali’s decoupage stall at The Curve’s Street Market. The sisters specialise in turning everyday objects like handphone pouches, photo frames and tiles into works of art using the decoupage technique. Like Zainab, many flea market vendors are artisans. They proudly exhibit their wares at weekend markets, knowing that the labour-intensive nature of their craft precludes the kind of large-scale production that would justify a store. Yet others, like Madam Teh, open stalls for their own enjoyment. “I don’t make any money from the antiques and knick-knacks I sell, since everything is sold at a cheaper price than what I initially paid. But it’s a good way to pass time and meet people,” enthuses this cheerful retiree.

It’s evident that flea markets appeal to a broad spectrum of people. Good bargains, availability of specialty goods, close proximity to eateries, night spots and even cinemas – all these combine to make flea markets a natural stop for those who want to shop, unwind and hang out with friends. Judging by the thousands who throng these markets every weekend, it would seem that Malaysian flea markets have hit on a winning formula and are set to become as much a national institution as the pasar pagi and pasar malam.

Since the 15^th April 2004 Central Market was taken over by a new organization called Central Market Sdn.Bhd. headed by Mr. Bernard Bong Yam Keng.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia has returned to the Malaysian scene with the sporty and magnificent-looking, but competitively priced, all-new Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0GT.

Don't let the relatively low price of RM115,980 (price on-the-road with insurance) of the Lancer 2.0GT, imported from Japan as a completely-built-up (CBU) car, lull you into thinking that this is a cheap car.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia CEO Fumihiko Minami at the car's launch recently stated that the competitive price was the result of much negotiations with the parent company in Japan, and that it is a conscious decision "to maintain our presence" in the market.

In terms of dimensions over the previous model, the new Lancer is 35mm longer at 4,570mm, 45mm higher at 1,490mm, and 65mm wider at 1,760mm. The body has been totally re-designed, and the Evolution 10 Lancer will be based on the same silhouette.

Visually, the new Lancer 2.0GT has an aggressive 'shark-faced' front end, and generally high waistline that tapers upwards towards the rear.

The GT version comes with a set of sporty-looking 18-inch wheels and a body kit comprising a mini-spoiler at the front, side skirts and a rear spoiler.

Its heart is a 2.0-litre DOHC, aluminium block engine equipped with MIVEC (Mitsubishi innovative valve timing and lift electronic control), with 155PS on tap, and 199Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a six-speed CVT (constantly variable transmission).

It also comes with a system called INVECS-III, that monitors road and driving conditions, and observes driver behaviour to create an intelligent shift profile and anticipate the driver's moves.

Also standard issue is a set of paddle shifters, made of lightweight titanium, located on the steering column and not on the steering wheel. Mitsubishi is quick to point out that these are not 'toy' push buttons fitted to the steering wheel.

Similarly, the paddle shifts work like the real McCoy, and the gearbox holds the gears whether you are bouncing off the rev-limiter or not. Invoking the paddle shifters is by flicking any one of them or pulling the gearshift lever to the right.

On a drive to Cameron Highlands and back, the Lancer takes to the long and high-speed sweepers on the Simpang Pulai-Camerons Highway like a duck to water, and handles the twists on the old Tapah road with ease.

The six-speed CVT behaves like most other CVTs around, holding a constant engine speed (and constant torque) while the drive and driven 'gears' change imperceptibly to build up speed, giving optimum power while being fuel-efficient.

The Lancer is most enjoyable in 'paddle shift' mode. Being direct-drive, there is none of the transmission slip associated with automatics, and you can feel the car lunge forward on up-shifts on account of the close ratio gears, and get real engine braking when you shift down.

Interestingly, the final drive ratios are slightly shorter when in 'manual' mode, ostensibly to give one better acceleration.

All in, I rate the Lancer 2.0GT a most enjoyable car for those who like driving.

PUTRAJAYA (Aug 14, 2007): The composer of the Negarakuku rap music video, Wee Meng Chee, 24, has made a public apology to the government and Malaysians who found it offensive.

The apology was conveyed by his father, Wee Ann Chee, at a meeting with MCA vice-president Datuk Dr Chua Soi Lek today.

Chua, who is also the health minister, announced the apology in a press conference after the meeting in the ministry, which lasted nearly an hour.

"I have spoken to Meng Chee personally through the phone and (have just met) his father. (Meng Chee) admits his mistake and said he did it in a very naive manner, as he loved music and did not have any intention to insult the Negaraku, Malaysia and Islam," Chua said.

He said he hoped the government and all Malaysians would accept the apology in good faith, as the composer "was just a young talented boy in music, and we should not pass any harsh judgment on him".

"The MCA has accepted the apology and I hope the government and all Malaysians will accept it, too.

"He has admitted his mistakes and has made an open apology. He used his creativeness in a wrong way.

"He is a very talented and creative person. He thought that he could be famous with his talent. But there is no short-cut to success and to be well-known."

Chua said no Malaysian, regardless of his or her race, should use the Negaraku to voice his or her frustration or for self-interest.

Meng Chee, a student doing mass communications in Ming Chuan University in Taiwan, uploaded his music video on YouTube last month.

The rap, which is interspersed with the national anthem, has been widely circulated and deemed by some to be insulting the Negaraku and Islam.

Wee had said the reaction was largely a result of the misunderstanding among the Malay community and the government.

Ann Chee, who was in the press conference, also apologised to the government and Malaysians.

The former singer and musician and a judge for singing competitions said he spoke to his son and admitted that what Meng Chee did was not right.

Chua said the MCA was intervening because as a Chinese-based political party, it has to help resolve problems involving the community.

Asked if he and Meng Chee discussed some parts of the rap which reflect the sentiment that the government has not been fair to the Chinese community, he said it was not raised in the conversation.

However, he said the MCA has been able to help those in the Chinese community who have different views or dissatisfaction.

He added that it was one's personal view that the government has not been fair.

"If they are not happy over anything, they should not touch on senstitive issues and affect the racial harmony in the country. There are channels for us to voice our grouses and not through other ways."

He acknowledged that the issue has caused uneasiness among Malaysians but said this has not affected the MCA.

Belacan: The paste that binds us all

The year before last, I was invited for a meeting by the Secretary-General of the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry.

The ministry was keen to produce a documentary on our heritage, and the secretary-general wanted some filmmakers to pitch some ideas that could be developed into a documentary.

When my turn came, I pitched the idea of belacan (shrimp paste). The entire group of sober-looking men-in-black broke into laughter. Deep in their subconscious, I was taking the mickey out of them and poking fun with my smelly belacan.

Fortunately, I was able to detail the aroma of belacan by using French cheese as my metaphor. Not that any one of them was deeply into wine and cheese but it was enough to convince Madame Secretary-General that my idea needed to be followed up on.

Two weeks later, I was called by Finas (the National Film Development Corporation) to follow up on the project. I was well prepared to meet the men-in-black. After a late morning tea, we began to dwell upon my belacan. I wanted to have an hour-long documentary or even longer, but Finas could only back me up with RM50,000 and a half-hour documentary.

What? I almost dropped my plate of mee goreng (fried noodles) on my lap. I could not believe what I heard. It was the mother and father of all insults. Not to me - a poor, unemployed geek who had been released from prison - but to belacan - our national heritage.

They had failed to accord the necessary respect the belacan should command . To them, it was just another mediocre proposal. I left the meeting sad and disappointed. I had failed to enthrone belacan in the seat of Koh-I-Noor via the door of Finas.

(Editor's note: the Koh-I-Noor is the most famous of legendary diamonds).

Those men-in-black had little understanding of the belacan's significance. To me, belacan is part of our national heritage - our warisan.

Banjaran Titiwangsa, A Famosa, Sungai Pahang, Batu Caves and Bukit Cina are all our warisan. Like belacan, these "monuments" were there before us to give the meaning of our existence; the sign of our identity - our Malaysianess.

If there is anything that can be shared by Malaysians, at home or abroad, without any prejudices, it would be belacan. Citizens could be engaging in emotional debates on the DEB (National Economic Policy), Bahasa Melayu or Bahasa Malaysia, Kongsi Raya or not to Kongsi Raya. But at the end of it all, they would end up eating nasi lemak, enjoying their rojak, slurping mee hailam, digging into roti canai banjir or indulging in kari kepala ikan. Somewhere, somehow, all these dishes have that little portion of belacan gelled into them.

One is not a thoroughbred Malaysian foodie if one is not able to identify the aroma of belacan. Walk through any kampung (village) or any housing estate around noon or early evening; one would not miss the aroma of fried garlic, ikan masin (salted fish) and of course, the smell of belacan. The aromas are the prophecy of a good meal in Malaysian homes.

It would not be a Malaysian kitchen without a portion of belacan hidden somewhere in the bakul (basket) or cupboard. The Malay, Indian, Chinese, Sabahan and Orang Asal are all united under the banner of belacan.

It is unnecessary to debate the importance of belacan as part of our national psyche. Like oxygen, we take it for granted. It is there all the time in our kitchen. Because it is there, we almost ignore how important it is to our cuisine.

Spices galore. Apart from belacan, these are the other
ingredients which make for delicious Malaysian food

Belacan is not an egoistic being. After being grilled or fried, it sacrifices itself - unseen and unrecognised - unlike kicap (soya sauce) or hot lada api (chillies) that make their presence felt. One would never hear someone saying over dinner "Gulai ini tak cukup belacan" ("This curry lacks belacan"), like they do with salt or chillies.

I have much respect for the belacan. Let me tell you the deep secret of my belacan adventure.

My grandmother showed my mother how to apply belacan in masakan Melayu (Malay cooking). As a male in the matrilineal

society of Negri Sembilan, I was not allowed to mess around in the kitchen. But I

managed to watch how my late mother made her sambal belacan and her sambal petai. That belacan knowledge was so valuable, it became my second passport when I journeyed the world.

I re-developed and reconstructed the belacan into a seducer.

During my travels, I mastered the art of making sambal belacan. Sometimes I added tomato, white wine, sherry, garlic, ginger, or lemon juice into my sambal concoction. Whenever I held a dinner party, I would direct my guests to my sambal belacan as a talking point.

My sambal belacan never failed me. It was magic.

Sambal belacan is indeed alluring. There is just something in the aroma of those little dried prawns and geragau (shrimp).

The geragau could be from Kuala Kedah, Mersing, Malacca, the South China Sea, Langkawi or Kalimantan - they are all from the same family. They are all united after being pressed into belacan paste. How lovely it would be if we were all pressed together, united in a box and marketed to the world as Malaysia United.

Maybe I should revisit those men-in-black at Finas and pitch another story about the belacan. Or take that fifty grand and start a belacan factory in Bangsar.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Major Malaysian bookstores pulled the final volume of the Harry Potter series off their shelves Saturday, protesting a price war sparked by supermarket retailers that sold the book at a massive discount.

Only customers who reserved copies of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" in advance could collect the book, Malaysia's three leading book chains — MPH Bookstores, Popular Book Co. and Times The Bookshop — said in a joint statement.

The companies, which run a total of more than 100 branches nationwide, also scrapped promotional activities — such as quiz competitions and breakfast parties — that were supposed to mark the book's launch at 7:01 a.m. Malaysian time Saturday (2301 GMT Friday).

The move was in response to what the booksellers called an "indiscriminate price discount" by grocery giants — including Malaysian outlets of Britain's Tesco PLC and France's Carrefour SA — that offered the new book at a discount of 40 ringgit ($11.40; €8.25) off its recommended retail price of 109.90 ringgit (US$31.40; $22.70).

The bookshops' decision, announced following a meeting late Friday, caught some customers by surprise.

"I have to rush to Tesco now and hope I can still get a copy," said college student Cynthia Raj. "This is terrible."

Nearly 80 Harry Potter fans had gathered outside Tesco's outlet in the Kuala Lumpur suburb of Ampang by 7 a.m.

"I'm here because the location is convenient," said 25-year-old clerk Tan Soh Yin. "But I wouldn't have minded paying more than 100 ringgit for the book. It's the final Harry Potter book. This only happens once in a lifetime."

Nuri wreckage located, no survivors found

The wreckage of the ill-fated Nuri helicopter belonging to the Royal Malaysian Air Force has been located at five kilometres north-west of Genting Sempah in Selangor at 1.24pm today, according to a statement from the RMAF. There were no survivors. Efforts are being made to retrieve the bodies which would be sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

MALAYSIAN football is the pits.

The 5-0 drubbing at the hands, or rather the feet, of Uzbekistan on Saturday after the 5-1 trouncing by China on Tuesday, were the final nails in the national team’s coffin.

The remaining match in the ongoing Asian Cup against Iran on Wednesday will be insignificant, although another hammering is expected given the team’s pathetic performances, not only in this tournament but also in other tournaments in the last few years.

The best thing now is to bury the whole episode and start from scratch.

It would not be embarrassing to take leave from active international football for about 10 years and build a formidable team that we can be proud of instead of pushing ahead with a "schoolboy team" that passes off as our national side.

Everyone, from clubs to state FAs to the Football Association of Malaysia, has contributed to the sorry state of soccer in the country.

We have had politicians and members of the royalty at the helm of the FAM for more than 20 years. What have we got to show for it, pray tell?

FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah did the honourable thing yesterday by resigning from all positions he held in the national football body.

A poll conducted by TV3 during its prime news slot yesterday revealed that 95 per cent of the viewers supported the resignation of Tengku Abdullah.

His resignation indicates he has taken responsibility for the poor performance of the national team. But he is not the only person who should take the blame. The whole committee should share the blame.

Instead of trying to persuade Tengku Abdullah to reconsider his decision, the officials should pick up courage and follow his lead: They should all resign.

Malaysia was once on par with teams such as South Korea and Japan. Today, these teams are playing in the World Cup tournament. Where is Malaysia? Why, losing to teams such as those from the Philippines and Sri Lanka, of course. What a shame. What a tragedy.

Sure, FAM brought several important tournaments such as the 1997 Youth World Cup and the current Asian Cup to our shores. But where is the result we have been yearning for? Has it contributed to raising the standard of the game locally?

Instead of just being gracious — and losing — hosts, we should start looking inwards. We should improve the standard of our game before playing against big teams.

It is frustrating for football fans. They have watched the national team’s slide since it last qualified for a prestigious international tournament — the 1980 Moscow Olympics — when the late Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah was FAM president.

Many are saying the slide started after Sultan Ahmad Shah and others took over in 1984. We have not seen any euphoric football moment since then.

From being ranked about 60-something by Fifa in the 80s, Malaysia is now languishing at a poor 149th position.

It is no wonder that FAM is not getting corporate sponsorships. Which company or brand would want to be associated with losers?

We are bankrupt where football is concerned and now FAM says it is on the verge of bankruptcy.

There is only one thing to do if the officials are really passionate about the game and if they want the sport to reach greater heights: FAM should be run by professionals.
